Franklin made music history in 1993 with the release of his debut album, Kirk Franklin and the Family, which was the first gospel album to sell more than one million units. Franklin’s eleventh CD, The Fight of My Life, was awarded two 2009 GRAMMY® Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album and Best Gospel Song for “Help Me Believe.” It follows his previous, RIAA-certified platinum CD, Hero, which remained in the Top 10 on the Billboard charts for close to two years after its release. In January 2011, Franklin was honored at the 26th Annual Stellar Awards with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award for his humanitarian efforts on behalf of Artists United for Haiti for the ground-breaking single, “Are You Listening.”
In Spring 2011, Franklin will resume hosting the fourth season of the BET original series, Sunday Best. The entrepreneur not only serves as host of the program, which features a nationwide search for the next best gospel artist, but co-executive produces the series. He is also a mentor to other gospel recording artist such as “Anthony Evans.” Kirk Franklin is best known for taken gospel music out of the church and into the streets, a feat foreign to sacred music. UBM: With all the success you have in gospel music, television, mentor and author how do handle it all?
Kirk: I do not let sells, awards or my achievements value me. God is always doing something through me and I’m just grateful for all that he has done so far.
UBM: Do you consider yourself a celebrity?
Kirk: I try not to but the church has entered into a celebrity status when you consider the mega-church or who is the hottest speaker or pastor at the time. I just enjoy what I do.
UBM: The tribute to Haiti what was that like?
Kirk: It’s always an honor to be active or take part in cause to bring unity. I’m just grateful to have been a part of the project. It gives me an opportunity to do my part as the body and give back to the community.
UBM: You have been very transparent and yet you still have some critics. How do you feel when people criticize what you are doing?
Kirk: I am not perfect. I’m not going try to act like, I’ve got it all together. I have my bouts with pride and self will getting in the way. What I try to do is be sensitive to God and what He requires me to do. As long as I respond to what He says then I am good. The more I am honest about it, the more victory I have over it. Therefore, the critics can do their job and I will do my job.
UBM: You are a true Key Player and “Smile” is on rotation on the Urban Buzz Magazine Gospel Show as well as other Kirk Franklin greats. So, we will look out for the rest of the hits on the new album which features; “I Am,” “Before I Die,” & the hit single “I Smile.” Plus songs with Marvin Sapp, John P. Kee & Mali Music! and in the mean time we will just smile.
